In the first half of 2026, China's CNC machine tool exports delivered an impressive performance characterised by a decline in shipment volume but a sharp rise in total value and average unit price, underscoring the industry's accelerated shift from a low-cost, volume-driven model to a technology-premium, high-quality development path. Customs data show that in the January–February period, machine tool exports reached USD 2.204 billion, up 15.70% year‑on‑year. In the first quarter, exports totalled USD 4.72 billion, an increase of 8.2%, while the number of units exported fell to 1.78 million, down 22.10% from a year earlier. Consequently, the average export price surged to USD 1,240 per unit, a remarkable 71.04% jump. The industry's overall health continued to improve: in the first quarter, the machine tool sector as a whole generated RMB 250.2 billion in revenue, up 9.0% year‑on‑year, with metal‑cutting machine tools alone contributing RMB 44.9 billion, an 11.5% increase, and achieving a profit margin of 6.1%.

The landscape of export destinations underwent a profound reshuffle. India, with imports of USD 550 million and a year‑on‑year growth of 25.1%, overtook Russia and Vietnam for the first time to become the largest market for Chinese machine tools. This surge was driven by India's rapid industrial upgrading in new energy, auto parts, precision hardware, and other sectors, which generated booming demand for mid‑to‑high‑end CNC equipment. Southeast Asia, buoyed by its thriving new energy and electronics industries, saw export values soar by 21.4% in the first quarter. Europe also performed well, with a 7.8% increase, as more small and medium‑sized enterprises turned to Chinese five‑axis machine tools, which offer reliable quality at prices 30% to 40% lower than their European counterparts.

The most encouraging development was the optimisation of the export product mix. In the first quarter, exports of high‑end machine tools surged 40% year‑on‑year, while the average export price of domestic five‑axis machines rose in tandem by 71%. High‑precision CNC machines used in aerospace, semiconductors, and other fields saw export values climb 15.6%, and advanced products such as five‑axis simultaneous machining centres and turn‑mill composite equipment enjoyed robust overseas sales. At the 14th China CNC Machine Tool Exhibition held in April 2026, the single‑unit export price of a domestically produced high‑end machine exceeded RMB 10 million for the first time, marking a leap from "price competition" to "value leadership." Technological breakthroughs provided a solid foundation, with multiple leading domestic manufacturers launching new upgraded models and some companies leveraging their flagship products—such as high‑precision gear‑cutting machines and five‑axis multi‑tasking centres—to deepen their presence in key markets like Europe and the Americas. The trend toward intelligentisation also emerged as a new growth driver: smart machines equipped with AI‑assisted programming and on‑line inspection capabilities have effectively alleviated overseas customers' labour shortages. Some enterprises secured million‑dollar orders in Russia, while others maintained full order books and exported their products to more than 30 countries and regions.

In 2025, China's machine tool exports ranked first globally for the first time, capturing a 21.6% market share and surpassing Germany. This leading position has been further consolidated in 2026. Industry analysts project that full‑year export growth in 2026 is likely to remain between 7% and 9%, supported by rising global investment in smart manufacturing and steady demand from high‑end sectors such as new energy vehicles, robotics, and aerospace. With continued technological advancement and improving product quality, China's CNC machine tools are winning increasing recognition and trust from international markets amid the worldwide transformation and upgrading of manufacturing—a true shift from selling products to selling technology.
